Thousands of faithful from the mid western states, especially the Chicago area used to travel to Pittsburgh to get the darshan of Lord Venkateswara. Although the experience was spiritually rewarding, time and effort required making the trip, it was difficult for many to have his darshan as often as their hearts desired. Many felt a void in their spiritual life and their discontent was widespread. The state of affairs continued until 1985. Due to the philanthropy of nine families who have donated 20 acres with a farm in Aurora (far western suburbs of Chicago) as a site for the proposed temple of Balaji was made at the beginning of a dream come true for many. Since Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) temple is an institution that used for countless generations, had developed large-scale plans linked to available resources and current needs.
No special pains taken in making models which meet the space requirements, while ensuring that it meets building codes, structural safety standards and the needs of the community.
Padmasri Sthapathy M. Muthiah, said an expert to build a temple in India, in collaboration with the Sri Subhash nadkarni, the renowned Chicago architect and a devotee of Balaji together they designed the temple. This design is a perfect blend of ancient architecture and modern technology. This structure also served as a model for other temples that were built later in the United States. A exclusive feature of the temple is the provision of circumambulation (pradakshina) inside the temple is not only the presiding god, but surrounded by all the major shrines in the temple.
